Welcome

May 7, 2008

Welcome to the NCI Program Blog.  Throughout the internship, you will be asked to blog about different topics that relate to both yourself and the larger Japanese American community.  I hope that this will be a fun and informative experience.

  1. Yeah, I know, I’m a smartass, commenting on the introductory post, but hear me out. I wanted to speak to the general blogging-ness.

So, I’m not going to lie. When I first saw the sheet on the blogging assignment, I thought it was pretty corny. Only now, after having seen everyone’s story and writing my own do I understand the function it serves. For future NCI interns, maybe even for young JAs in general, it provides a valuable resource to see how others have realized their own places and identities. That’s hip. I get it. At the same time, I can’t help but feel that having all our experiences in the same place creates a little bit of pressure to reconcile them with each other, to maybe suggest a whole that doesn’t really exist among our 14 different life perspectives and experiences. Maybe that’s just me. Still, though, I think it’s overall a very positive thing.

As for comments, though. I think it may be a little much to expect six very personal, sincere comments. At the same time, I understand that it helps us to really reflect on each other’s accounts.

I do hope that this blog becomes a useful reference, and helps us to understand each other better and be more sensitive to our individual points of view. I just hope it doesn’t suffer for lack of sincerity. Hopefully, this will just be the start of a broader and more deep reaching conversation.
